Well, Dusk, I think you are pretty much correct.

The power of the stored souls are then expended . . . The subject is held at the threshold of death while the stolen essence is forced into, absorbed into every wound and dying, bleeding lattice. The agony is the crucible/trial the master is shaped by. As the power of the souls is absorbed, it is converted into raw, mastered energy . . . the independence of the souls ceases to exist, subjugated by the survival of the master.
Those who endure emerge changed. The ebony can no longer harm them. Their eyes take on the hue of crimson red . . . Fangs lengthen into the teeth of a beast. What remains of their original soul is drowned into the corrupted mass deaths of dozens of victims . . . They are no longer merely mortal.
